Aidan wins two bronze medals at Special Olympics

Aidan Montgomery reached a high point in his swimming career when he returned from the World Special Olympic Summer Games in China with two bronze medals. The 22-year-old Grantham swimmer came home last week from the Shanghai Games, for people with learning disabilities, after winning his medals in the 200m individual medley and the 100m butterfly for Great Britain. He also came fourth with his team in the 4x50m freestyle relay. Aidan, a member of Grantham Swimming Club, said: "I did as well as I thought I would. It was an incredible experience. "We had some very good support at the pool. There were between 500 and 1,000 people there to watch us swim. "It was the biggest sporting event in the world this year. There were 80,000 people at the opening ceremony and 153 countries took part." Aidan spent three weeks in China and was joined out there by his two sisters. He was told that he had been selected for the Great Britain team 18 months ago and had to raise £2,000 to make the trip to Shanghai. Aidan says he intends to keep swimming competitively for a few more years. The European championships are held next year and in 2009 Leicester is the stage for the Special Olympic National Summer Games.
