West Bridgford players star at Nottingham Tennis Centre

Players from West Bridgford Tennis Club have won thirteen gold medals between them at the Tennis Foundation's 8th National Learning Disability Tennis Event at Nottingham Tennis Centre.

With the tournament's 41 player all playing in different groups against opponents of similar tennis ability, Joseph Eccles, Stephen Uttley and Aiden Leighton all won gold medals in singles and doubles competition, while Peter Norton, William Haynes and Matthew Chilvers each won gold medals in singles and silver medals in doubles.

Luke East, Leigh Foster, Alex Eustace and Katherine Ashcroft all won doubles gold medals, with Scott Brown and Alex Hopkinson each winning two silver medals apiece after their singles and doubles events.

While narrowly missing out on a medal in the Men's Group 2 Singles, Michael Clarke won a doubles silver medal as he, Eccles and Eustace all added to the silver and bronze medals they won at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens in the summer.

"I'm very proud of them all, they've all done a great job and it's fantastic to see our group growing in number all the time and some new players coming through to achieve success at their first tournament," said Lesley Whitehead, Tennis Manager and Disability Tennis Coordinator at West Bridgford Tennis Club. "It's been a great year for the group, starting with our own National tournament that we held for the second year running in the spring and Michael, Joseph and Alex all going on to represent Great Britain in Athens."

The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Cllr Michael Wildgust, presented the players with their trophies and said: “I really enjoy coming along to all the disability tennis events the Tennis Foundation run in Nottingham and this weekend has been no exception.”

“It’s always a great family day out and I encourage everyone to go and watch any local disability tennis events as the standard of tennis is just so impressive.”

AUTUMN REGIONAL COMPETITON  10/08/2011

This very successful day was held at Scropton RDA Centre in Derbyshire on Monday 26th September. There were 24 riders competing from East Midlands, Yorkshire and Eastern Regions in 4 different disciplines. These were Prix Caprilli (Dressage with jumping), 4 different levels of Dressage, Working Trails and Horsecare and Knowledge. There were also 2 competitors who just took part in the Horsecare and Knowledge. Christine Durrance, our East Midlands Rider in the World Games, competed and won the Sash for Best Overall rider. A cake was presented to Christine from East Midlands Region – and eaten by all – to congratulate her on her fantastic World Games results. Our thanks must go to Scropton, their helpers and the Judges and Writers, without whom we could not have run this event. We were also blessed by lovely weather.

Saturday, October 08, 2011 Leicester Mercury Follow Tennis ace Zara Jurenko just missed out on a medal at the INAS Global Games in Italy.
The 24-year-old from Kirby Muxloe went closest to success in the mixed doubles which is a qualifying event for next year's Paralympics. Jurenko, partnered by Peter Millar, won through to a play-off for a bronze medal against an Australian pair and had a match point before a bizarre incident turned the course of the contest. The female player for Australia hit a ball that would have landed long and given Jurenko and Millar a place on the podium. But, before the ball bounced it hit Millar, therefore giving the point to the Australian duo, who went on to clinch the match and the bronze medal in a tie-break. Tom Styles, of Melton Mowbray, was also involved in the action, with his playing partner, Alistair Daniels. They finished third in their men's doubles round-robin group, narrowly missing out on qualification for the knockout semi-finals. Table-tennis pair Patrick Cox, of Blaby, and Leicester's Jeffrey James also competed in Luguria, and were a "touch disappointed" not to reach the later rounds of the competition. However, Steve Humphries, the Leicester City Council officer who has been following their progress, said: "Just like Zara and Tom, Patrick and Jeffrey fought tigerishly throughout, although they may feel a touch disappointed not to reach the later rounds of the competition. "It certainly ends a remarkable period for Patrick who, at 17, won gold and silver at the Special Olympics World Games and is now challenging some of the sport's elite athletes with a learning disability. "Once again, Leicestershire sport can be very proud of the outstanding efforts and never-give-up attitude of the four athletes."
